• Weight management: Their calm, cuddly nature means Selkirks are less hyperactive than breeds like the Mau. Obesity can creep up if playtime is neglected, putting stress on joints and the heart.
• Skin care under curls: Their dense curls can trap oil, leading to greasy coats or mild dermatitis if not groomed. Watch for red or itchy patches and check for fungal infections in humid areas.
• Dental health: Like many pedigree cats, they’re prone to plaque buildup and gingivitis. Brushing with feline toothpaste or offering dental treats helps prevent future tooth loss ( PetMD ).
• Grooming: A Selkirk’s coat is their crown jewel, but also their challenge. Weekly brushing is necessary to prevent tangles, especially in India’s shedding seasons (spring and pre-monsoon). A grooming glove often works better than a slicker brush on curls.
• Dental care: Brushing two to three times a week is ideal. If brushing is tough, dental water additives or special treats can help.
• Play and exercise: They’re affectionate lap cats, but don’t mistake that for laziness. Daily play sessions with feather wands or puzzle toys prevent weight gain and keep their minds sharp.
• Climate comfort: In Indian summers, their plush coats can overheat them. Always provide shaded, cool rooms with fans or AC. In colder states, their curls keep them cozy, but a soft blanket or heated bed is a bonus.
• Hydration support: Like Persians, Selkirks may be prone to urinary issues. Mixing wet food into their diet ensures steady hydration.
• Vet visits: Move to biannual check-ups to catch PKD or heart issues early.
• Diet: Switch to senior formulas—lower calories but enriched with taurine, omega-3s, and joint support like glucosamine.
• Mobility: Since arthritis is possible, ramps and padded beds make life easier.
• Comfortable spaces: Senior Selkirks adore lounging, but watch for overheating in summer. Rotate between cool resting spots and soft, warm blankets in winter.
